2017 – An overview/ʼn Oorsig

LEPHALALE — On the front page of the 5 May edition, “Hospital blamed for death” told the heart-breaking story of 13 year old Tshotlego Lenney Ntau who died and her broken family who claimed it was as the result of negligence on the part of Ellisras Provincial Hospital. The lack of medical facilities in Steenbokpan was also addressed.
Mining rights for Groothoek Coal Mining Company (Pty) Ltd were approved but interested parties still have the opportunity to appeal. Mogol Post carried the story on the front page of the 12 May edition and received many enquiries regarding the “appeal questionnaire”.
The amount of people that go missing in Limpopo was addressed on the front page of the 19 May edition after Quintin Quickly from Vaalwater and Flora Moatshe from Ga-Seleka had been missing for weeks. Flora’s body was later found in a shallow grave where her “friend” had buried her. He also identified her himself. Mogol Post never heard anything from Quintin’s family again.

On the front page of the 6th June edition, the dangers of Nyaope and the bizarre manner in which people use it and come by it were revealed in the article “Nyaope destruction”. The story of the ongoing issue of sewerage shared the front page.
Daar is tog soms goeie nuus soos op die voorblad van die 16 Junie-uitgawe met die storie van Pippie se nuwe kans.
Die raaiseldood van Monique Barnard word meer as ’n jaar na haar dood op die voorblad van 23 Junie aangespreek. Waarom is daar nog niemand in hegtenis geneem as die polisie redelik seker was hulle weet wie die verdagte is? Waarom is die moordenaar nog op vrye voet?
’n Gesin van Pretoria oorleef ’n gru-botsing net buite Vaalwater en hulle deel hulle storie met Mogol Pos op die voorblad van 30 Junie.
On 7 July, a student from the TVET College in Lephalale made the front page after he built a motor bike. The heading was “Classroom to VROOM”.
Vuil drinkwater en Mej Bosveld deel die voorblad van 14 Julie.
Die dood van twee jong pa’s, Albert van Deventer en FC Vorster, wat albei in motorongelukke sterf, ruk die gemeenskap en Mogol Pos vertel meer op die voorblad van 21 Julie.
“R800 000 stolen, employees guilty” blared out from the front page of 28 July after the sly side of employees from a cell phone shop came to light.
Die manne van Afriforum besluit om daadweklike aksie te neem ten opsigte van die rioolbesoedeling in die Mogolrivier. Hulle skep emmers vol rioolwater en neem dit na die munisipaliteit se kantore en haal 4 Augustus se voorblad. Dié aksie lok groot reaksie uit.
The colourful front page of 11 August had everyone talking. Ria Wells reported on Molatelo Kgwantha who organised this special day with the theme “Embrace the African Queen you are”.
Lizelle Lamprecht en Johan Cronje oorleef wonderbaarlik nadat die helikopter waarin hulle was, neerstort en aan die brand slaan op die plaas Somerset Noord. Mogol Pos doen verslag op die voorblad van 18 Augustus.
Vaalwater haal die voorblad die week van 25 Augustus toe ’n vrou verkrag word in die derde van ’n reeks van vier voorvalle van inbrake en aanvalle op dieselfde dag.
On the front page of Mogol Post 1 September edition, photos were published of three of the four prisoners who escaped from the Lephalale SAPS holding cells. Two of the escapees were involved in a farm attack.
The front page of 8 September on the “State of Lephalale” and the photos showing the terrible state of the town provoked a lot of reaction from both the community and the municipality.
15 September’s front page was dedicated to Shorty Pontes and Lawrence Shumba. The death of both these men was lamented. Shorty Pontes was a legend in the Lephalale community and Lawrence Shumba was a legend in his place of work. Photographs of his Mercedes Benz torn in two were shown on various social media platforms.
22 September – “Strike turns to riot”. Exxaro was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Exxaro workers and members of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) burned buses and what was supposed to be a peaceful strike turned into violence and arson.
29 September se voorblad lees “Gemeenskap in rou” nadat dr Werner Emslie op sy plaas doodgeskiet en sy vrou, dr Mariëtte, baie ernstig gewond is. Die plaasaanval op die Emslies het die hele landbougemeenskap geruk en baie veiligheidsisteme is hersien na dié gebeure. Dr Mariëtte kon nie haar bene beweeg na die voorval nie.
Nog belangrike gebeure in Oktober was ʼn Malaria-paniek wat in die dorp opgevlam het nadat verskeie voorvalle van malaria aangemeld is en op 27 Oktober kom feitlik die hele Lephalale tot stilstand vir dr Werner Emslie se roudiens.
Op 3 November breek Mogol Pos die stilswye oor Scott van Zyl se raaiseldood in Zimbabwe. Dit blyk dat daar baie ander waarhede in dié saak skuil.
More news in November was the endless water problems in Onverwacht and the escape of Petrus Moyo, who had been arrested for the murder of Dr. Werner Emslie amongst others. Moyo was rearrested the day after his escape.
24 November is Mogol Pos se eerste van drie kersuitgawes van die jaar en die 14 wapens wat uit ʼn kluis gesteel is veroorsaak ’n opskudding.
December editions started with the wonderful good news story of a school in Seleka that was upgraded by funds given by various role players and the PNA saga.
