TOM BURKE — Police arrested three suspects, namely Matias Kunda (33), Mutale Brown Mwilwa (35) and John Bwalya (44) at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry in the Tom Burke policing area outside Lephalale for smuggling various items including illicit creams and copper cables.
The three men, driving in a truck, had already crossed the border from Botswana into South Africa when the police directed the truck towards the searching bay for inspection.
During the searching process, tubes of Epiderm skin lightening cream, Cyproheptadine tablets, copper cables and various shoes were found hidden in the back of the truck.
The trio was immediately apprehended and the following items were seized:
• 16 600 × 15 g tubes of Epiderm cream;
• 759 400 × Cyproheptadine tablets;
• 13 kg of copper cables; and
• 112 pairs of shoes.
The police also confiscated the truck and trailer. The estimated value of the recovered items is over R23 million.
They appeared in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 12 March for charges of smuggling illicit creams, tablets, copper cables and shoes. All the suspects were denied bail and their case was postponed to Monday 18 March for formal bail application and for further police investigations.
