LEPHALALE — Two people, a male who is allegedly a Warrant Officer in the SAPS and a female who was not identified at the time of going to press, died and seven people sustained serious injuries after four cars were involved in a crash on the R518 (Marken Road) on Friday night 17 March around 17:45.
According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Lephalale SAPS spokesperson, it is alleged that one car tried to overtake another, but the driver of the car lost control, collided with another one which led to two other cars also getting involved in the collision.
According to an eyewitness who saw the whole incident, the driver of the Nissan NP 200 with a trailer overtook the City Golf at a dangerous spot. “We were waiting at the Stop/Go sign on the Marken Road from the direction of Marken. It was our chance to go when the Nissan came from the direction of Lephalale and overtook the Golf. The next thing I saw was the City Golf flying through the air and a Fortuner was hit” she said.
The four cars involved are as follows:
A Toyota Fortuner, registration number CNP 651 L, with four occupants all of who were taken to Mediclinic Lephalale for medical treatment; a Nissan NP 200, registration number CJP 148 L with two occupants who died on the scene (the driver was allegedly a police officer); a red City Golf registration number DHC 173 L with five occupants of whom three were taken to Lephalale Provincial Hospital for medical treatment and two who did not sustain any injuries; and an Opel Corsa registration number DKB 799 L with two occupants who weren’t injured.
A case of culpable homicide was opened at Lephalale SAPS.
Police investigations are continuing.
