5 years of spreading love

LEPHALALE — Plans to share the festive cheer with those less fortunate is already well underway, thanks to the Moolman Group. The Group’s annual Bags Full of Love Corporate Social Investment (CSI) project – now in its fifth year – involves local school children assisting in creating Festive Season décor at certain of the Moolman Group’s shopping centres.
The project has grown over the years from three schools and one shopping centre in 2012 to ten schools and five shopping centres this year.
The CSI initiative’s core focus is to involve communities surrounding Moolman Group’s shopping centres, assist local less fortunate schools and provide an affordable, yet creative solution for Festive Season décor at smaller shopping centres. Over the past five years, the Bags Full of Love project has been rolled out at 22 shopping centres, with 48 schools participating, which resulted in the decorating of 15 333 white paper bags. The project cost including the sponsorship towards the schools amounts to a total value of R2 005 347 and contributes to uplift less fortunate schools in four different provinces.
The shopping centres participating in this year’s Bags Full of Love promotion are Lephalale Mall (Limpopo); KG Mall (Mpumalanga); Madelief Centre (Gauteng) and Kaalfontein Corner (Gauteng).
The participating schools include Kings College, Sedibeng School for the Deaf and Hardekool Akademie (Limpopo); Resilindile Primary School and Nelson Ngubane Primary School (Mpumalanga); Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees, Laerskool Rachel De Beer, Kameelfontein Laerskool, Drake Koka Primary School and David Makhibo Secondary School (Gauteng).
Each school receives white paper shopping bags and a variety of new stationery with which to decorate them. The schools keep the stationery to use as they see fit after the project is over. Children flex their creative muscles and have fun decorating the bags, which are then put up as part of the Festive Season décor at their local shopping centre for all to see. To ensure a sustainable, long-term impact Moolman Group requested a Santa’s wish list from each school detailing where new resources were most needed, from learning aids; to sports and lab equipment; desks and chairs; to computer upgrades and more – all to the benefit of the learners.
The Bags Full of Love initiative is intended to foster stronger relationships between the respective shopping centres and their surrounding communities. “The project not only gives something back to the community in the form of financial support and donated stationery but encourages participation in the mall’s activities,” says Pieter Lombaard, CEO of the Moolman Group. “We are passionate about playing our part in securing a bright future for South Africa. Bags Full of Love is our way of spreading a little festive cheer in our communities, bringing smiles to the faces of our kids, and helping local schools function at their best,” he adds.
