“A horrific sight” — Mob justice

MARAPONG — Suspected thieves were dealt with the mob justice style in Marapong on Sunday morning 27 October.

According to information received, one person was caught in the early hours while attempting to steal.

Some community members reportedly used whistles; a communication medium used to invite other community members whenever a criminal act is busted.

When there were a fair number of community members gathered the suspected thief was forced to take the angry community to his accomplices and items such as baby clothes and plasma TVs were discovered in another house.

One of the residents who spoke to Mogol Post on condition of anonymity says just before 06:00 there was noise and quite a number of people from X2 and X4 have quickly responded to the whistle blows.

“What I have witnessed on Sunday morning was a horrific sight.

“There was one injured man who has been beaten to a pulp and as soon as he pointed to the other person he works with, the community left him bleeding.

“They continued with the second person to the other side of Marapong X4 and the first one died where he was left on the ground,” said the informant.

Lephalale Cluster Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena confirmed that there was a mob justice and further added that two people were seriously injured and taken to hospital while one died following the attacks in Marapong.

He condemned the killings of the suspects and says the community must work with Police by reporting such criminal activities and have perpetrators brought to book.

“On 23 October we even had a meeting with residents of Marapong X4 where we informed them not to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Cases of attempted murder and murder were opened at Lephalale SAPS and at the time of going to print no arrest has been made yet.

Investigations continue.
