THABAZIMBI — Information was received over the weekend regarding possible rhino poaching at Marikele National Park.
The Rhino Task Team members of the Stock Theft unit and the Heritage Protection Group (HPG) as well as Marikele Park rangers were activated and they monitored the area.
On Saturday evening 21 May around 23:00 two vehicles were stopped on the Thabazimbi/Rooiberg road next to the park. The vehicles were searched and five suspects were arrested.
Members confiscated a .458 hunting rifle with silencer, eight live rounds, two knives and eight cell phones.
They appeared in the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court on Monday 23 May 2016 for conspiracy to commit rhino poaching.
W.O. Jurg van Heerden of the Rhino Task Team says all the suspects are originally from Giyani area. One of the suspects used to work as security guard at Marikele’s main entrance.
They appeared in Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 – and Tuesday 24 May for legal aid.
The case was postponed to Monday 30 May.
