Armed robbers jailed

LEPHALALE — Four suspects were each sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment for armed robbery in the Lephalale Regional Court on Tuesday 5 March 2019. The 15 years will run concurrently.

According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Lephalale Cluster spokesperson, on 21 March 2014 around 12:00 the four suspects, Joseph Motshegoa (39), Abraham Charane (51), Justice Shai Lekokotla (34) and Vincent Molwela Mosweu (35) followed a vehicle of Matopi Ford that was transporting an amount of R197 000 to Nedbank in Lephalale town.

The driver of the vehicle was hijacked in the parking area in front of the bank and he was held at gunpoint. The suspects drove away with the bakkie with the driver still inside.

They drove to a secluded area nearby Lephalale town where a fight broke out after the suspects attempted to take the money from the driver. The suspects managed to overpower him and took the money with them as they escaped in the direction of the industrial area. They left him and the bakkie in the bushes.

According to Police information, the suspects drove away with a white Mercedes Benz that was waiting for them at the industrial area in Onverwacht. They proceeded to Marapong where the money was divided amongst the four.

Three days after the incident, Detective Joe of Lephalale SAPS managed to arrest one of the suspects at Medupi Power Station, with another one of the suspects arrested while he was on his way from his home in Gamashashane to Lephalale town.

The suspects were identified by CCTV cameras and they pointed each other out, leading to the arrest of all four suspects.

During the arrest, the amount of R96 000 was recovered in possession of the accused.

One of the suspects, Vincent Malwela Mosweu (35), was transferred to Polokwane as he is also facing a charge of motor vehicle theft.
