Battery suspects caught red-handed

MARAPONG — Lephalale SAPS Task Team, members of Crime Intelligence and the Heritage Protection Group (HPG) recovered 26 tower 12 volt batteries with the estimated value of R80 000. The discovery was made while they were in Marapong investigating a murder case on Friday 20 October.
According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena from Lephalale SAPS, the investigating team came across a motor vehicle that appeared suspicious. Three men were in the process of loading something when one of them ran away. Upon further investigation it was found that the men were busy loading 26 tower 12 volt batteries.
WO Mokoena confirmed that the batteries were stolen from the Tafelkop Mountain next to the R518 (Marken Road).
The two suspects, Thomas Mawela (26) and Clever Mthema (25), were arrested on Friday 20 October around 05:00 and they appeared in Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 October on a charge of suspected stolen property.
According to WO Mokoena, Mawela was released with a court warning as it is alleged that he was only contacted to pick up the stolen goods. Mthema remains in custody.
