HOOPDAL — Mogol Post reported about a murder in Hoopdal last week (Senseless Murder, page 8) and the suspect was on the run.
In the meantime, SAPS Hoopdal started a massive manhunt which led to the arrest of the suspect, Freddie Chauke (25). The arrest was because of an allegation that on 26 June Chauke stabbed and killed Jafta Koboyane (35) with a knife and he further injured Koboyane’s friend by stabbing him in his neck with a knife. Koboyane and his friend were allegedly walking from a tavern to their home in Skierlik settlement around 01:00.
The friend was taken to Thabazimbi Hospital and was later released. Koboyane was certified dead on the scene by EMS.
Chauke appeared in Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on 27 June on a charge of murder and the case was postponed to 3 July for Chauke to get a legal aid representative. The case was remanded to 24 August for further investigation. No bail was granted and he remains in custody.
