LEPHALALE — Lieutenant Precious Munyai of Lephalale SAPS gave feedback during the CPF meeting last Thursday on the percentage increase and decrease in various crime categories during the time period August 2015 to August 2016.
According to Lt Munyai, the percentage of contact crimes increased by 2.94% during the mentioned period. She said the increase in especially Marapong could be due to liquor related issues. Lephalale SAPS also had an increase in rape cases.
Lt Munyai says Lephalale SAPS did well with an increase in the arrests of drug-related crimes compared to last year the same time. 28.7% more arrests were made concerning drugs.
Cases of house breaking decreased by 33.9%, but Lt Munyai urged the community to up their security – especially those who stay close to open land. “The criminals hide in the bushes on open land and it gives them an easy escape route” she said.
All other serious crimes like fraud, shoplifting and theft showed a decrease of 10.64%.
Reported cases of arson and malicious damage to property decreased by 68.75% compared to August last year. This may be due to the uproar in Marapong where busses were burnt down and properties were set on fire during last year August.
