Disaster struck

LEPHALALE — Maria Bafelwang Maphoto (43) and Patrick Mashalale (39) died on Thursday 30 August around 18:00 after they were involved in a collision on the R510 (Stockpoort Road) about 30 km from Lephalale.

They were travelling in a silver Opel Corsa, with registration number BPH 513 L and the other car involved in the collision was a white Toyota Hilux with registration number DPN 439 L.

According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Lephalale SAPS Cluster Spokesperson, the driver of the Hilux was picked up by another vehicle after the incident and he fled the scene. At the time of going to print, Police were still searching for him. According to Police, his name is Daniel Jacobus du Plessis (28).

According to Mokoena, one of the victims of the accident was still alive when EMS arrived on the scene. They were trapped in the vehicle and Lephalale Fire Brigade from the Disaster Management Centre was contacted to supply Jaws of Life to cut the vehicle so that access may be gained to treat the victims, but their phones stayed unanswered.

According to an official of Monster Security, who reported the incident, emergency services had to wait four hours for Disaster Management to arrive from Mokopane due to the non-responsive disaster management services in Lephalale.
