Exxaro cares

LEPHALALE — Exxaro showed their support by giving 67 minutes for Mandela in an extraordinary way. They assisted in the renovation of the children and infant’s ward and children’s play room at Ellisras Provincial Hospital. The project was completed and the handover took place on Friday 11 August at the hospital premises. It was a celebration of joy and gratitude.
Dr D Mbako, CEO of Ellisras Provincial Hospital, explained that Exxaro had assisted them in getting up to standard. “You improved the care in the neo-natal ward and thus assisted us in reducing our mortality rate to achieve the national goal. We have to minimize the mortality rate and comply with national standards,” he said.
Nomthetho Mpepe, Senior Occupational Nurse, furthermore said that she urges Exxaro to keep building on the relationship between them. “This should be an ongoing relationship and not be limited to Mandela Day.”
She explained that everyone has a different opinion on what special deed to do on Mandela Day and that this project started as a small dream that has now come true.
They decided to start with the children’s wards because of Mandela’s affection for and special bond with children. She quoted the late Madiba: “The true character of society is revealed in how it treats its children”.
“We just dreamed of a clean play area and maybe a few toys, but then Exxaro came and changed our lives forever.” She concluded by saying that the project went “infectious” in a good way!
The outcome of their dream is three newly painted rooms in the children’s ward as well as a newly decorated play room. Sandy Troskie and learners from Hoërskool Ellisras were responsible for the painting of characters from the movie “Madagascar” on the walls of the play room.
Manager Beneficiation Operations, Dr Adrie Conradie, said that Exxaro’s logo is “Powering Possibility” and that this project is just a practical way to power possibility. “To take the walls of the children’s wards and to do something positive with them is to empower the people staying and working here. It’s to be in a bit of a fantasy world,” he said. He thanked all the companies and individuals who contributed material, time and expertise to enable this dream to become a reality.
MG Mashile, Senior Manager: Hospital Services, who represented the District Executive Manager, said that what Exxaro did is inspiring and that the doctors and nurses should be inspired by working in such a lovely environment.
He concluded by saying that children are the future of the country and that the refurbishment and renovation of these wards contributes to happiness in general. “You gave them something that will make them dream,” he said.
He thanked the team from Exxaro and Johan Wepener, General Manager, in particular for changing the lives of many people.
