Foreigners with foreign cargo

LEPHALALE — An Ethiopian national (38) and a Somalian national (40) were arrested by the SAPS Provincial Tracking team for possession of suspected stolen property / counterfeit goods, to the estimated street value of about R1 200 000 to R1 500 000.
Acting on an intelligence driven operation, the SAPS Provincial tracking team spotted a rather suspicious truck that was travelling southwards along the N1 North. The truck was stopped and the driver was questioned. A car was escorting the truck and the driver of the car was also stopped and questioned.
Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Lephalale SAPS spokesperson, said after opening the truck, between 900 and 1 000 boxes were discovered. He said both the driver of the truck and the driver of the escorting car could not give full account of the truck load, but the truck driver showed the police an invoice that looked suspicious. When the suspects were told they were under arrest, the driver of the escorting car allegedly took out money and tried to bribe Const Makola of the Provincial Tracking Team. According to WO Mokoena, Makola took the money (R13 000) and told the driver that he was under arrest for bribery
At the time of going to press, Police still had to open the boxes to ascertain what the content of the boxes was. According to WO Mokoena, preliminary inquiries showed that the boxes contain Soviet takkies.
The investigation continues.
