LEPHALALE — A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at Lephalale SAPS on Friday 28 April after a Volkswagen Quantum collided with a hippopotamus on the R510 in the early morning hours about 5 km from Stockpoort.
Mogol Post spoke to Trudie Joubert who took her daughter to town to catch the Lowveld Bus. She passed the hippo around 04:00 on Friday and according to her, she nearly drove into the hippo, because she didn’t see it at all.
According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena from Lephalale SAPS, it is suspected that the hippo came from the Limpopo River and lay down in the middle of the road to get some heat. The driver of the Quantum did not see the hippo as it was still dark and he collided with the head of the hippo. There were three people in the Quantum who were uninjured and there was minor damage to the vehicle.
Mokoena says an official of the Department of Nature Conservation went to the scene and removed the hippo from the road and Lt Col Ngoepe, SAPS Provincial spokesperson, said the hippo’s carcass was removed by Nature Conservation.
