Three suspects were arrested on Sunday morning when members of the Rhino Task Team were patrolling the R71 outside Namakgale around 05:30.
According to Col Ronel Otto, Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, they stopped a white Toyota bakkie with a Limpopo registration number. They searched the bakkie and found a black bag containing four white lion claws, a head and a tail.
The police arrested Peter Nathi (41), Alone Mapfumari (41) and Phineas Mngomezulu (34).
The suspects appeared in the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court on Monday 20 June for cases of possession of an endangered animal (white lion). According to Col. Otto, the case is postponed to 27 June. The suspects remain in custody.
The head, tail and claws of the white lion male were removed. The white lion female was killed but no body parts were removed. It is suspected that there is a new market for the head and claws of white lion males and not females.
