VAALWATER — Three lions and a tiger were found dead in their cages on a farm in the Vaalwater area in the early morning hours of Friday 25 May.
According to Police, it is alleged that the owner of the farm awoke due to his dogs’ incessant barking and went outside to investigate.
He saw that the cages where his lions and the tiger were kept, were open. He also saw that one of the lions was battling to breathe at the entrance of the cage, while two other lions and a tiger were dead already.
The Police in Vaalwater were summoned to the scene and preliminary investigations led them to meat in the area that was possibly stuffed with poison and the cause of the animals’ death, however, the exact cause of death will only be determined after more Police and forensic investigation.
It is suspected that the police arrived at the scene fast enough to prevent the suspects from removing the body parts of the animals.
Two regular lions, one white lion and a tiger were killed in this incident.
Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Section Head Media Centre: Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison in Limpopo said the South African Police Service in Limpopo is condemning the resurfacing of incidents of illegal poaching of protected species in the strongest possible terms.
The suspects are unknown and at the time of going to print, no arrests were made yet.
