MARAPONG — Lephalale SAPS have opened a case of culpable homicide after 33-year-old Klass Mashiane lost his life in a train crash on the Exxaro railway crossing on Wednesday, 16 March 2016 at 22:15.
According to police spokesperson, W.O. Frans Mokoena, Mashiane went to work only to find that he had left his work boots at home in Marapong. On returning to collect them his VW Polo Sedan collided with an empty Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) train.
According to Exxaro the TFR was on its way towards the Exxaro Grootegeluk Complex (GGC) load out station when the accident occurred.
ER24 media and client liaison coordinator, Russel Meiring, said that ER24 medics were alerted to the incident by local CPF members and upon arrival, paramedics found a light motor vehicle smashed against the front of a large train. “The driver of the motor vehicle had been pulled from the vehicle by CPF members and on assessment the paramedics found that the man had already succumbed to his injuries”, Meiring added.
Exxaro extended condolences to the family saying that “We (Exxaro) convey sincere condolences to family and friends of the deceased” the statement said.
The driver of the train sustained no injuries.
