LEPHALALE — Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor Jack Maeko celebrated his birthday on 17 May at Moses Monanyane Sports Grounds in Shongoane 3.
The party was attended by political heavyweights from across the Waterberg District and Limpopo Province as well as various stakeholders.
Company representatives, businesses and speakers used the opportunity to congratulate Maeko and share with the audience their plans for the development of Lephalale and its people.
Eskom, Exxaro and Enel Solar Plant respectively said they have been working closely with the municipality and Enel mentioned that through their working relationship with Maeko, they managed to identify orphans in drop-in centres across villages. A decision was made to donate three pairs of school uniforms to each of the 288 needy children. In addition, four students received bursaries and are currently at different universities in the country.
Maeko said he was very grateful for the overwhelming support he received on his birthday and thanked stakeholders for their contribution in using his birthday to give to the needy.
He said it was essential to highlight the contribution done by companies that operate in Lephalale, including Exxaro’s commitment to help in an educational programme that will see students no longer paying for camps during winter holidays as the company will cover the costs.
Blankets and sanitary towels were donated to the elderly, the disabled and the needy.
Rosina Mosima, who represented Lephalale Disability Council, praised Maeko for always taking the concerns of the disabled serious and ensuring they are well catered for.
In a generous gesture, when officials from the office of the Mayor gave Maeko a heater as a present, he accepted and regifted it to Kgoši (Chief) RJ Shongoane.
His closing remarks were that his birthday celebrations are not about him but to have local businesses work together to help the needy.
