LEPHALALE — The 17 year old Mmamote Kekana was recently chosen as one of 36 finalists for the Zee World Miss Commonwealth 2017. Extraordinary if you keep in mind that the 36 finalists were chosen out of 240 entries countrywide.
Mmamote grew up in Onverwacht, Lephalale, and she was a learner at Laerskool Bosveld Primary. She spent her high school years until grade 10 at Hoërskool Ellisras when circumstance dictated that she had to join Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in Mokopane in 2017. She is currently living with her grandma but her heart and soul however still lies in Lephalale.
Mmamote says she started to enter pageants two years ago, because she wants to spread her wings and let her voice be heard by a bigger audience.
One of her projects is to supply books to the community which she gets sponsored by book shops or members of the community. Reading is a passion for Mmamote and she says if you cannot read, you will never be able to be independent.
Her primary focus for entering the competition is to eradicate illiteracy. “I want to make sure everyone can at least read and write, then more people can get employed and that can reduce poverty” she says.
Although Mmamote is beautiful, she insists that the reason she entered for the Miss Commonwealth 2017 competition, is because the organisers and judges are not only looking for a beautiful face and body, but also for brains and an above average personality. “I have entered this competition to win” she says.
In addition to her good looks and clever mind, Mmamote was also a member of Hoërskool Ellisras’ first netball team and participated in athletics.
Mmamote wants to become a business analyst or a cosmetic scientist after school. “I really have a problem skin with pigmentation spots from exposure to sunlight and I battle to get a product that works well for me. I want to study to understand what is behind all the bottles and creams and design the best skin product ever” she explains.
The name of her skin product is obvious – Nanzi – because that is her beloved grandma’s nickname for her .
