LEPHALALE — Kwena Motsoko (26) wanted to be a fashion designer ever since she was young. Later in her life her love for fixing things and rearranging clothes and accessories led to her making handmade necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other accessories for men and women.
“I have always loved drawing, rearranging clothes, making things with my hands, redesigning things and making something new out of something old. My dream was to be a fashion designer one day but that dream took a bit of a turn. Now my true love is making jewellery with my own two hands”, Kwena says.
She says her passion for handmade jewellery started when she remade an old necklace. “I redesigned the whole thing. My friends and family liked it a lot and that encouraged me to do it again. The wonderful outcome is Nicia Collection”.
Kwena, a true Bushveld gem, was a learner at Laerskool Bosveld Primary and she finished her matric at Hoërskool Ellisras. She says there is nothing that makes her happier than walking in the streets of her hometown and seeing handmade items. It inspires her to make creative items of her own.
Apart from being a jewellery entrepreneur, she also holds a Public Relations Diploma from Rosebank College. While studying PR in Rosebank, she had the opportunity to assist at Choc Childhood Cancer foundation, a centre that helps and supports children diagnosed with cancer. “It was phenomenal and I will forever cherish it. It taught me the gift of giving back and to be aware of your social responsibility – help out wherever you can and give your time without expecting something in return” she says.
“I hope that in three years’ time I will open my own walk-in jewellery store where I can also teach people to make their own jewellery” she concluded.
