VAALWATER — Waterberg Academy staff, parents and educators hosted their annual Poetry Evening for the seventh time.
The evening was held on Wednesday 13 April and was organised by Academy educator Janice McBride and parent Mariette Nicholson.
They will also head the team to organise and host the Eisteddfod later in 2016.
School principal Mark Godfrey thanked them both for their hard work and expressed astonishment at the number of pupils they managed to encourage to participate in the evening.
Dr Phillip Calcott organized some competitive word games during the evening. The word “empasm” provoked some interest. According to www.thefreedictionary.com the word refers to a perfumed powder sprinkled on the body to mask the odour of sweat.
“I would also like to grant a further word of thanks to the Grade 9 drama class for their introductory skits in support of Marang Mochusi and Rebecca Banda’s poems. These were brilliant,” Godfrey said.
This year’s Poet’s Poet was voted for by all the other poets and the winner was Grade 11’s Tiishetjo Maila with his haunting poem:
I had a dream about you.
