LEPHALALE — Around 100 people marched to Eskom’s Information Centre in Onverwacht on Monday morning around 11:00 and broke down the palisade gate to gain entry to the premises. Police, members of security companies and members of the CPF were at the scene and representatives of Eskom tried to talk to the representatives of the rioters.
Mogol Post spoke to Lt Col Daniel Ramakgoagoa, Lephalale SAPS Station Commander on the scene and he said the bottom line of all the protests is insufficient local employment by Eskom. Some of the protestors said they want the jobs of the more than 2 000 contractors who will have to leave Lephalale by the end of March 2018 when their contracts have expired.
A representative of Eskom said the office in Onverwacht is a soft target. “They have a problem with Medupi’s employment, but they cannot protest at the Power Station because it is a National Key Point,” he said.
Eskom failed to comment at the time of going to print.
