On Saturday 2 March 2019, many athletes had the exciting opportunity to run a half marathon alongside 2 “rhinos” at Marakele National Park. Not real rhinos though, these were two dedicated runners running in rhino suits for the charity Save the Rhino.
The Running Rhinos have represented Save the Rhino International (SRI) at running events since 2014. This includes the London Marathon in 2014 and 2015, the Great Wall of China Marathon in 2016, the Blackmores Sydney Marathon and the South Africa’s Kaapsehoop Marathon in 2017 among others.
Marakele is known to be an extremely warm race with little shade so the sheer dedication shown by running in these heavy suits is truly awe inspiring.
What’s next for these “Rhinos”? They are now planning to trade in the heat of Marakele for the cold of the arctic with the Antarctic Ice Marathon in December later this year.
