LEPHALALE — After a fatal accident in March 2016 at the Manketti railway crossing on the way to Exxaro Grootegeluk mine, Exxaro undertook to hold awareness campaigns with the slogan “Stop before the train stops you”, on a quarterly basis. It is the same slogan printed onto keyring holders that are handed out to workers.
On Thursday 17th November, Shift C from Rail Dispatch Exxaro, were at their post at the railway crossing from 04:30 with posters that encouraged the traffic to stop at the stop sign before the railway crossing. The posters read: “Stop Speeding”, “Obey and Live”, “Adhere to Rules” and “Look and Act Safely” etc.
The mine’s peak traffic hours are from 4:30 to 6:45 and then again from 15:00 when the workers return home and about 600 vehicles cross the railway line. The project links in the Exxaro’s “Road to Zero Harm” and they want to ensure that in all aspects no fatalities take place. “One life lost is one too many”, says Susan Pheiffer from Exxaro.
Although the road is a public road, the railway line is registered through Exxaro and during the previous campaign in August they tried to make Mr. Public aware of the railway crossing. It is extremely important to them that all road users approach the railway crossing with caution and adhere to road regulations. Exxaro have installed warning signs, a robot and a stop sign there. They plan to also include speed bumps for greater awareness.
Internally Exarro are also making their workers aware of road safety especially with the upcoming festive season and the Silly Season syndrome!
