BULGERIVIER — Two goods trains, transporting coal, collided head-on between 01:00 and 02:00 on Wednesday morning 16 October.
According to Captain Ramaotswa, Station Commander at Bulgerivier Police, the one train was on its way from Thabazimbi and the other one from Lephalale when it collided between Hoopdal and Bulgerivier on the railway bridge over the Matlabas River near Matjiesfontein.
“The one train that was coming from Lephalale had the right of way, and when they had to exchange railways, they collided. The reason for the incident is still unclear,” said Capt Ramaotswa on Wednesday morning.
At the time of going to print, officials from Spoornet were at the scene, discussing the way forward. According to information, it can take three to four weeks to clear the scene, and before rail transport will be possible again.
Two people died in the incident, and two people were critically injured and admitted in Mediclinic Thabazimbi.
Capt Ramaotswa confirmed that Police were in the process of registering a case of culpable homicide at Bulgerivier SAPS.
