LEPHALALE – Willene Steyn, a native of Lephalale who is associated with the Ampath Laboratory which has branches in both the Superspar centre as well as at Ellisras Chemist, has had a dream to start a chronic and acute dialysis unit which has now become a reality.
Over the years she has had many enquiries from chronic dialysis patients who needed to drive to the city three times a week for four-hour dialysis sessions. The good news is the patients from Lephalale and surrounds can now knock at the door of Willene ’s Hope Renal Care and Dialysis practice for help. Willene studied at the Tshwane University of Technology and achieved her Baccalaureus Technology: Clinical Technology certificate in 2003.
Lawrence Adebayo from Nigeria is a trained dialysis practitioner who trained in South Africa and will handle the dialysis practice together with Willene.
Willene says that the kidneys are the master chemists of the body and the importance of them cannot be taken lightly as the function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluids from the body.
According to Willene warning signs of kidney failure or problems may include: high blood pressure, blood and / or protein in the urine, a creatine blood test greater than 1.2 for women and 1.4 for men, a filtration rate (GFR) of less than 60 and more frequent urination – particularly at night, or difficult or painful urination, puffiness around the eyes, swelling of hands and feet – especially in children, upper back pain, skin rash and fatigue.
The Hope Renal Care and Dialysis practice is in Joe Slovo venue right opposite the EOH Medical Centre. Should you want to make use of their services or know of anyone who may currently be undergoing dialysis please contact the centre on 082 561 5900.
