PIETERMARTIZBURG/DURBAN — Every year thousands of athletes from all over the world come together to undertake a feat of strength like no other. The Comrades Marathon is a truely unique long distance running event, with athletes planning entire years around their preperations to participate and hopefully finish this run. At just over 90 km of strenuous hills it’s clear that just finishing within the allocated time is a remarkable achievement.
The following athletes from Lephalale took to the challenge and finished the race: Martiens Vorster (8:42:46), Annerine van Schalkwyk (10:51:20), Frikkie van der Merwe (11:21:24), Realeboga Henry Lefawane (11:23:56), Rico van Staden (11:23:56), Lerato Mogale (11:54:35), Henry Pretorius (11:56:57) and Delani Ngcobo (11:59:10).
Sadly, one of the runners, Hannele Christie, suffered a serious injury over 70 km into the race and was unable to finish.
This being the first Comrades for most of these runners in quite the achievement as this year’s race was slightly longer then usual. Being a down-run is also not as big an advantage as most people would think, as this puts major stress on a persons body over such a long distance.
Congratulations to all of these athletes for completing the Ultimate Human Race.
