Gerhard defends Mogol Open

LEPHALALE — 51 players arrived at Mogol Club to play in the 2017 Edition of the Mogol Open Golf Tournament. This tournament boasts with names of past winners who are playing on the professional scene currently and it is considered one of the tougher tournaments to play.
2017 was no exception, the greens were running fast and it felt like summer was earlier than usual.
Local boy Gerhard Pepler was back to defend his title, but the competition was tough. After nine holes, it was the junior from Zebula Golf Estate and Tukkies HPC Golf Academy Francois Janse van Rensburg who was in the lead with three birdies but added two drop shots to turn in -1 (35). He could not keep it going and it was Peter Masehela from Polokwane Golf Club who surprised everyone with the 18-hole lead on one under par (71). The defending champion finished with level par 72. All was to play for on the last 18 with a lot of players still in the running.
One by one the players faded away on a very tough and hot afternoon. Peter Masehela first started dropping away with a third nine of 41. Francois Janse van Rensburg and Barend Gerber from Thabazimbi Golf Club could just not get the putts to fall in order to put pressure on Gerhard. Gerhard went quietly around the course with a level round of 72 and showed more maturity than the previous year where he almost lost the tournament on the last hole.
Vincent Olley from Naboomspruit Golf Club fought hard on the final round with a one under par (35) to close with a total of four over par 147, but it was all in vain as Gerhard kept his composure and finished with a total of one over par 145.
Gerhard is currently the number one Junior and SAGDB player in Limpopo and was again selected for the Limpopo Inter Provincial Team. Mogol Club wishes Gerhard well together with the Provincial Team at Bryanston Country Club in September.
