“I can’t go home without a medal”

MARAPONG — The well decorated team, Tielelo of Tielelo Secondary School in Marapong, continues to put Lephalale Athletics among the most talked about in the Province, by winning a total of 16 medals in two leagues so far in the track and field that kick-started on 20 September at Hoërskool Ellisras.

“Golden girl” Thando Magwai

Team Tielelo travelled to Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane to measure themselves on a bigger scale, where they met with top athletes from Limpopo.

The Tielelo team impressed everyone with their first race when the young Thando Magwai cruised straight to gold during her 100 m run.

“She’s my golden girl, she always puts me at ease, so I truly expected nothing but gold from her,” said Coach Solomon Moruni.

Moruni says he is happy to see more parents getting supportive and encouraging their children to join sports. “I’m also grateful to see companies coming on board as well to help out where they can. Recently we got sponsored by Lephalale BP which contributed a lot to our trip to Polokwane,” Moruni said.

As the day progressed, team Tielelo continued their medal collections with Ronny Mpherwane bringing home another gold medal for hurdles and a silver for high jump.

“I can’t go back home without a medal,” were words uttered by Lephalale’s athletes to motivate themselves.

After several tries, Selby Montshiwa and Elijah Modise managed to get themselves onto the podium by both earning a silver medal in the 400 m junior men and senior men respectively. Right after his silver success, Modise needed medical attention as he collapsed due to fatigue and dehydration. Accompanied by Mr Nyama, (Tielelo teacher and sports care taker) Modise was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. “It has never been an easy road to success, track and field needs a focused mind but I’m glad the team got this far. It shows how determined they all are,” says Coach Solomon Moruni.

Their final event was a relay, and with strained muscles and aching bodies in the team, coach Solomon had to participate and lead his team, which he did, and took on the 400 m mixed relay, earning Tielelo another silver.

Team Tielelo Athletics would like to extend their gratitude to BP for their sponsorship and to every individual who has contributed by donating and supporting the team.

The community and local businesses are still urged to help them with sponsorships and donations.
