LEPHALALE — #WhoRunsYourPark is an initiative to bring people back into parks. The aim is to raise awareness of the current state of our local parks and to raise funds into developing the parks around Lephalale.
The touch rugby tournament held on the 19th November 2016 at the Mogol sports fields was the beginning of this movement. It attracted locals, young and old where both junior and senior teams could compete for the bragging rights on who runs their parks. The players registered ranged from kids in grade 1 to men contemplating retirement.
The tournament was a joint venture by KT Sports and JHT. These companies, led by people who grew up playing in parks around Lephalale, understand the important role that parks play in the integration and the development of the community.
”The tournament was a resounding success. We received wonderful support from the community and a lot of teams came out to prove that they run their parks. It was a day of great fun and entertainment and we received great feedback and request to do this type of event more often and we shall. We thank each team that took part and congratulations to our winners on the day; PJ for Player of the tournament, Wessels’ Springboks for winning our junior division and Juice for walking away with the inaugural title and the prize money. We hope next time to bring more of the community out, as our main goal is to bridge the gaps and heal ills that hold back our community’s true potential from flourishing. Nelson Mandela once said: ‘Sports can create hope where there was once despair. It is more powerful that governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination’”.
