MARAPONG — A mob justice incident took place in Marapong Ext 4 on Sunday 6 January 2019.
Eye witnesses say a young man was allegedly found attempting to steal car parts in a household in the Extension 4 area.
The 17-year-old boy, whose name is known but withheld, was found in the yard on Sunday morning before he was cornered and other members of the community joined in and reportedly assaulted him. They also accused him of being under the influence of a substance.
Mogol Post learnt that during the incident the boy confessed to have been assigned to steal by someone who fixes cars in the area.
When the angry community went to the mentioned person in the company of the suspect, he denied knowing him.
Some onlookers claimed to have been taken to a place where stolen car parts and sound systems were found by angry community members.
Lephalale Cluster Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena said on Sunday a case of malicious damage to property was opened against the boy by the house owner. He says the community should call Police and not take the law into their own hands when they catch suspected criminals.
The boy was taken to hospital for medical treatment and no assault charge was opened against the community members at the time of going to print.
