3 years for culpable homicide — 1st in Lephalale

LEPHALALE — The 28-year-old Sebatana Frans Sepoloane was sentenced to three years imprisonment on three counts of culpable homicide in the Lephalale Regional Court on Monday 10 February. He wasn’t given the option of paying a fine.

According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Lephalale Cluster spokesperson, the accused was driving a Volkswagen Jetta with registration number TPF 883 L on 24 December 2016 on the R518 near Shongoane Village. He overtook a vehicle on the Palala bridge and collided with a Toyota Quantum with registration number CZG 577 L on the side of the road. Three people died in the incident.

Apart from the three years imprisonment, his driver’s license was suspended for three years.

The investigating officer on the case was Sergeant Martin Makgae.

WO Mokoena says the outcome of this case is the first of its kind in Lephalale, and it is believed to communicate a strong message to all drivers to always drive carefully.
