Aids Day commemoration

LEPHALALE — Lephalale Local Municipality employees commemorated World Aids Day at the Municipality on 5 December 2017. Representatives from the District Health Department and supporting institution Care Works educated and empowered the employees with information regarding HIV/AIDS and advice for those who are affected and infected.
World AIDS Day is commemorated annually on 1 December and offers an opportunity for people to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, show support for people living and affected by HIV/AIDS and who died as a result of HIV/AIDS related diseases. Candles were lit as a symbol of remembrance and honour of those who lost their lives to AIDS and support people positively living with HIV/AIDS.
According to the Waterberg District Department of Health’s Peter Kolobe, statistics shows that Lephalale has a high HIV/AIDS prevalence.
Kolobe said the statistics dictates to everyone to be cautious and stay protected at all times in order to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS which is on a rapid increase and becoming fiercely territorial.
Earlier this year in a presentation by the Deputy Director of HIV/AID and STI Cluster in the Waterberg District, Tryphina Bambo, statistics revealed that 578 new cases of HIV/AIDS infection were recorded from October to December 2016 in Lephalale and a further 583 recorded from January 2017 to March. This meant that in six months period 1 161 (one thousand, one hundred and sixty one) people were infected.
