Hijacked vehicle recovered

NORTHAM — A vehicle that was hijacked in Northam was recovered on the night of 5 January after a shootout involving the suspects and the police.
According to information, the police received a tipoff about the existence of the said vehicle at Sefikile village in the Northwest province, adjacent to Northam policing precinct. On their arrival, the vehicle matching the description of the hijacked Ford bantam with three occupants was noticed parked outside a tavern.
The occupants allegedly started firing at the police and sped off. The police gave chase and returned fire, injuring one suspect in the leg. The said vehicle hit an electric pole and the remaining two suspects fled on foot.
The 24 year old injured suspect was taken to hospital and is under police guard. No SAPS members were injured.
One of the suspects who fled from the scene is out on bail for a house robbery committed in Northam and is also wanted for a case of another house robbery that was committed in November last year in Thabazimbi.
The firearm, a 9 mm pistol that was allegedly used during the shooting, was also confiscated.
