LESIDENG — The community of Leseding in Steenbokpan was shocked when a VW Polo spiralled out of control and hit two elderly male citizens on Sunday 21 March.
According to one of the eye witnesses, the female driver (in her 30s) lost control of the car on the gravel road near Leseding Sports Ground and hit two men who were metres away from the road.
Residents had to work together to lift the car so that they could remove one seriously injured male who was trapped underneath the car. The other injured person was laying in front of the car.
One of the community leaders of Leseding, Petrus Magwai, EPF Chairperson, said that what he saw was scary and traumatising.
“We were watching a football game around 18:00 and the lady driver, who visited the area, was driving recklessly near the sports ground.
“Unfortunately, she ended up hitting two men. Three guys lifted the car to move the other pedestrian who was trapped underneath,” he explained.
Magwai says some fuming community members wanted to take the law into their own hands before there was intervention.
“We surrounded the place trying to control angry community members until the police could arrive at around 20:00. We were risking our lives, but we managed to calm them down.
“It is unfortunate that one of the injured men, August Matlolela, succumbed to the injuries he sustained and died in hospital on Monday 22 March. The other pedestrian did not sustain serious injuries and was discharged from hospital,” he said.
According to Lephalale Cluster Police Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened at Lephalale SAPS.
