Six wanted for arson, robbery

The Nizams store was set ablaze

MARAPONG — Six people were involved in the arson and business robbery of Nizams, a shop in Marapong Spar Centre on Sunday night 11 December. On Monday morning 12 December, the Police launched a manhunt for the suspects.
According to Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena, Communication Officer of Lephalale Cluster, it is alleged that on Sunday night around 19:50, the victim was confronted by six unknown suspects while he was busy closing the store Nizams.
One of the suspects threatened him with a firearm and demanded money. It is reported that approximately
R50 000 was taken by the robbers before they demanded more money and when they were told there was nothing more to give, they doused the store with petrol, set it alight and fled the scene.
It is also reported that one of the senior members of Nizams incurred minor burn injuries during the incident.
According to Mokoena, the estimated damage is about R11 million. At the time of going to print, the suspects were still unknown and no arrests had been made.
According to Charles Chirenje, Centre Manager at Marapong Shopping Centre, the complex cannot conclude the cost resulting from the damage at this stage and they will get the figures after assessment for insurance purposes.
Furthermore nearby shops like Ackerman’s and Build-It were affected by the damage due to power cables which were burnt.
