TOM BURKE — The 38-year-old suspect who was arrested on Saturday 26 January 2019 for smuggling illicit creams and tablets at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry, appeared before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 5 February.
He was denied bail and the case was postponed to 8 February 2019 for further police investigations and for a formal bail application.
The suspect was arrested when he was crossing the border from Botswana into South Africa with a truck and was directed towards the searching bay for investigation.
During the searching process, boxes of Epiderm skin lightening cream and Cyproheptadine tablets were found hidden inside the empty diesel tanks loaded on the back of the truck.
The driver was immediately arrested and 4 500 × 15 g tubes of Epiderm cream and 80 000 Cyproheptadine tablets with a total estimated value of R2,4 million were confiscated.
Police investigations continue.
