Two murders — Mine workers clash

NORTHAM — A 45 year old man, Mthetheleli Zefunele, an employee at Northam Platinum Mine, died at the Northam 4 way stop on the R510. He suffered a fatal gunshot wound, and died on the scene at approximately 15:20, on Sunday 5 June.
An unknown suspect was reported to have fled the scene. At the time of going to press no arrests have been made. The deceased was a member of NUM (National Union of Mine Workers).
Mine workers have been clashing again since early Monday morning on the Northam / Thabazimbi road near the Railway Gate. The exact reasons for the clashes are unknown at this point.
At approximately 9:20 on Monday another person died at this spot after being stabbed with an assegai. According to Col. Ronel Otto, Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, he was first reported to be a member of AMCU, but it was later confirmed that he was a member of NUM.
Public order policing (POP) members were deployed to stabilise the situation. Motorists and travellers were advised to avoid the area. Later Monday morning a POP member fired rubber bullets to disperse the groups. By 11:00 the situation was back to normal on the R510 road.
Col. Otto said no other injuries were reported.
On Tuesday morning the situation was still peaceful, and POP members were still patrolling the area.
