Marlothii Learning Academy

What is in a name?

LEPHALALE — At the Marlothii Learning Centre in Lephalale a proud worm adorns each learners’ shirt. A worm as an emblem?
Corney Myburgh, school head and owner of the centre, explains that most of the children that end up at Marlothii feel like worms when they arrive. They feel lost, pushed out, rejected by the “normal” system. They mostly feel like a total failure and each child is searching for their place in life, to be accepted and recognized.
The wire heart around each worm is symbolic of the fact that each child (worm) is enfolded in a wire heart in which they are protected by the love of each facilitator. “Just like the worm that sits upright in the wire heart, so we help each child to sit upright and to achieve their full potential,” says Corney.
The butterfly is symbolic of the children that have completed their school career just like the worm that completes its life cycle. “It means that the child has found their path in life, a butterfly emerges – beautiful, self-assured yet fragile and precious. May these children rise like butterflies, as the Marlothii stands out in the veld, these children will stand out in society,” Corney explained.
