Marakele Marathon — a run on the wild side

MARAKELE — The Marakele Marathon is a unique marathon hosted annually in the Marakele National Park. The seventh Marakele Marathon took place on Saturday 27 February with the day’s activities kicking off early at 06:00 with the marathon and 21 km runners, followed shortly by the 10 km runners and lastly the 5 km fun run. Cash prizes were rewarded to the winners of each category.
What sets this event apart from other marathons is that a large portion of the race is run in a Big 5 environment, with armed rangers patrolling along the track to keep the runners safe. This race is also a Comrades qualifier.
